softball team have been playing with or against each other since they were five. this summer could be the last time they ever share a uniform again. the eagles 18-u softball teammates are this week's amateur athletes. john thompson says, "i firmly believe that there are things that can only be taught when you play team sports that will follow you throughout life. you can't learn it anywhere else." for some of thompson's team, they've been learning together for most of their softball careers. because of that, they've grown closer then any of them ever expected. riley shopp says, "i've traveled with other teams, but i've never clicked with another team as much as i do together, they laugh, they cry, they win, they lose together. it's a pretty tight knit group." for the senior members of the team, it's one last time to take the field with their closest friends. randi eggleston says, "i just want this to be a great season. i just want to finish strong and i'm going to miss it so much, softball's been my life since i was little." and they'll get a chance to end their softball careers on a high note. the eagles 18u team has qualified for a tournament in hawai'i. but for thompson, these trips are more than a getaway. thompson says, "the trips that we do like this are special for me because it shows these girls that there's a lot more than the small towns that they live in. that they can go out and couple girls on this team that still have never been on an airplane, never been out of the pacific northwest. this is to show them the world and that it is there for them." although, for some... the plane ride can wait. stephani woods says, "oh i'm going to be terrified. i don't even like going on trains." flights aside, some players are excited for the new life experiences in a whole new world. areona conte says, "not only do we get to go together as a big family, but we do get to expereience other ethnic groups and cultural backgrounds. and it's really good to expand and see the world with the people that are your second family." and as far as the softball goes, the eagles think they're going to be very competitive. eggleston says, "oh yeah. oh yeah. we're going to kick some butt. we're going to have a lot of fun down there." today the medford
