EJ Holland, the track and cross country star from Ashland High School, is preparing for his senior season and has some big goals.

the runner. he holds several of ashland high school's track records and is arguably the top cross country runner in the state. e-j is newswatch 12's amateur athlete of the week. ej wasn't always a serious runner. in fact, it wasn't until some of his peers convinced him in middle school that he started truly competing. and while he's gotten better, training is just as tough as day one. ej holland says, "even now. it doesn't get any easier you just start getting faster. work outs i was doing back in eighth grade are still as hard now just because i'm still putting out the same effort, i'm just running faster times." for ej's cross country and track coach, ej is unlike any runner he's seen in his four decades of coaching running in the rogue valley. hans voskes says, "i've had some exceptional runners. ej's, you know, on top of that. and ej is not just a runner, he's an athlete. if he had decided years ago to be a basketball player or a football player or whatever. and this is the way he shows it. in cross and in track and it's a perfect match." what sets ej apart, according to voskes, is his dedication and diligence within his craft holland says, "it's a little bit like a full-time job, you know? you don't get to just quit whenever you want. the consistency is really is what is key to the success." ej has his eyes set on individual accomplishments, but he thinks this could be the year for ashland cross country. so does his coach. voskes says, "knowing these cameron stein and others -- i sleep well at night." ej finished runner up in the oregon sports awards for boys prep athlete of the year, but has his eyes set on a chance at cross country athlete of the year. holland through the pain every day and keep improving." e-j will have to wait for july 22nd when the oregon sports
