ral leader. a phenomenal teacher. those are some of the phrases used to describe tia mclean today. at a ceremony at helman elementary school this morning... she accepted a 500 dollar check...and the "thank yous" from her fellow teachers...and her students. michelle says, "tia is amazing. to be in her classroom every day is a magical experience for kids." michelle cuddeback is the school's principal. she's known tia for years. michelle says, "sometimes i walk in her classroom and she's doing a lesson in a french d it makes learning really come alive." tia says, "this isn't just me. this is for all of us. this is to recognizes our school they recognizes our district and our community." to celebrate...she and another teacher, valerie mccoy... performed a dance. tia says she's part hawaiian. she and valerie also teach hula to their students. nats of dance rachel says, "but miss tia wasn't the only one being celebrated. they also celebrated miss valerie...with a surprise flash mob hula." nats of dance michele says, "she's very humble she does not like to be in the spotlight we knew we would never be able to have a retirement celebration unless we surprise her." nats of valerie's surprised face...boy puts lei on valerie valerie says, "i was overwhelmed i have my heart just opened and to see them all she went in around and talked every single student and teacher it was wonderful." valerie used to teach in hawaii...and has been teaching in some capacity since she was 16. she's spent 19 of them in the ashland school district. tia says, "we got to have the ruse of me excepting the award which i did but we also got to honor her today which felt really good." in ashland, rachel tiede, nw12. tia is now a candidate for the 20-20 oregon teacher of the
