announ crash-landed somewhere out here dodge road in the sams valley area, an airport work with more than fifty years of experience working on planes tells me he's only seen a couple of crashes out here in his time, and he says the pilot did everything right." every pilot knows the risk you take when you take off. last night - that risk became a reality for the pilot of this small plane. "he put the airplane down the best place he could." steve pankonin has been working on planes for nearly fifty years. he says the pilot told him his engine gave out in the air, forcing him to crash land. "he did a good job of it." the plane landed on flat ground with the wings level. "when it happens like that you've got a real good chance of walking away without much problems." both the pilot and passenger survived, but both were hurt in the crash. in all of his time working at the small, private airport, pankonin can only recall 2 or 3 crashes. he says they don't happen often.. but it's important to keep in mind - flying has about the same risk factor as riding a motorcycle. "it's a lot of fun, a lot of fun, but just like anything else, mechanics are mechanics, they can have a problem." he says the engine failure that caused last night's crash is nearly impossible to prevent. "it's just like driving your car, how you going to know when it's going to quit? you have no way of knowing." the f-a-a -- and the national transportation safety board are investigating the crash. in white city, emma balkenbush,
