story tonight -- the effects of a glo newswatch12's cassidy delamarter spoke with local businesses today. cassidy, how is this shortage impacting the rogue valley? places throughout the rogue valley are having a hard time getting helium... and some just haven't been able to keep it in stock because it's so expensive right now. one supplier i spoke with told me they aren't accepting any new customers for helium... they're focusing on making sure they can provide for the customers they already have. bruce says, "we are having to go out to worldwide markets to bring in helium." bruce tozer is the manager at central welding supply. he sells several tanks, including helium. bruce says, "we have a number of customers and the consumer products and there are some people who use it for research and development." tozer says he wouldn't call it a shortage. he says there's helium available, but mainly in other countries. and the helium in other countries is much more expensive. bruce says, "we've paid a very low price for helium up until now and again there's other resources around the world that have been paying a lot more for helium." other countries charge ten times as much for helium. i looked up the prices for helium and the average was a few hundred dollars in the u.s. in other countries, one tank is thousands of dollars. ever since central welding supply heard of the shortage a year ago, they began preparing as best they could. bruce says, "so actually our supply chain is increasing over the next couple of months because we've been planning for this. doesn't mean the prices won't be going up because they will be." now retailers will just have to decide if they're willing to pay the extra cost. and some places are already having a difficult time getting helium. myles says, "so when we ordered we're not getting the quantity that we order it's still arriving but not as much is for asking you know we have to have helium to inflate balloons so that's kind of the deal." helium is used for more than just balloons. doctors use it for life saving m-r-i scans and it's even used to build new technology like l-e-d lights. as a shopper, you can expect to see an increase in the cost of helium and helium products. in white
