hike wagner butte-pkg jake says, "it's the return of hiking season and after a winter of rest, we're jumping right into a grind of a trail. here at wagner butte, it's about ten miles round trip with some pretty serious incline to start. so, for the first time since last year, let's take a hike." among southern oregon trails, this is one of the harder ones. you're gaining over 5,000 feet in elevation... and for the first three miles, the switchbacks are in full effect. fallen trees look like they were blocking the trail at one point in time, but that's no concern to us today. about a third of the way through, the forest turns to meadow ... and a history lesson in store. jake says, "one of the main attractions at wagner butte is sheep creek slide. what you're seeing here is the rebirth of a four-mile slope because back in the 80s, 400,000 tons of debris came down in an avalanche, leaving this behind." back on the trail we continue our climb... runoff water heading towards the base... no surprise since a couple patches of snow are in mid-melt. the trail flattens after turning left out of wagner glade... the manzanita trees signaling you're close ... the wide open skies serving have to traverse some rocks. careful to not slip... but the manzanita trees signaling you're close ... the wide open skies serving as motivation. the paved way soon comes to an end... and to get to the top you'll have to traverse some rocks. careful to not slip... but it's very manageable with the end in sight. just under five miles in the books, and the hardest part behind you. jake says, "well we've reached the top, 7,000 feet in the air. you've got some sensational views of mt. shasta to the south and mt. mclaughlin to the north, and a nice little rocky mound to take it all in. and before you head down, make sure to sign this journal to let everyone know you were here. from the top of wagner butte, jake garcia, newswatch 12 sports." here's a
