investigation. newswatch 12's emma balkenbush is live in downtown ashland. she's been speaking with local businesses about how the outage affected them. emma, when can those businesses expect to have natural gas restored? [a10]avista gas outage day customers in the downtown area would be restored by noon today. however - it recently updated that to the end of the day. some businesses do have natural gas again like several hotels in the area. and some never lost it to begin with. one business owner tells me the outage was just what she needed. "there was a hot water heater here but the contractor took it out and put this other kind so we were very blessed that we could stay open and do business." her unique aroma cafe combines an all-organic, gluten free menu with essential oils infused into them. for the last 3 years - she's been working hard to make it take off. as it turns out - a widespread natural gas outage gave her the boost in business she's hoped for. "i usually am not here behind the kitchen, i'm doing a lot of other things and i had to stay and cook and serve with my other staff person all day, til closing." she says so many people came in, she had to do an extra shopping trip for supplies. while the outage meant good news for chertow - other businesses weren't as lucky. "right now we're having to play a little catch up from the last ten days." the assistant general manager of the ashland springs hotel says the business was without natural gas for about a day. guests couldn't have hot water for showers or heated rooms. the hotel did what it could with extra blankets and space heaters - but ultimately saw a drop in revenue. it's a scenario the hotel has never been in before. and while it caused quite the headache - now is the time to focus on planning ahead. "we do have a meeting scheduled for tomorrow so we can go through and autopsy what happened so that we can be more prepared for this should it ever happen again." he says despite the inconvenience, his guests had a great attitude. "that's probably helped us get through this with as minimal damage as possible because they've been wonderful."
