it may like just an average day at the ashland armory. but right on the other side of the doors, several hundred people gathered to applaud, celebrate, sing, dance, whatever it takes to not only celebrate, but continue the legacy of doctor martin luther king jr. and outside, the line went around the building. everyone trying to get into the 31st annual martin luther king jr. day city celebration. they did so by having a number of inspiring performances. a high schooler's slam poetry. a choir singing about being fired up. and the bishop mayfield band, taking on the classics. keynote speaker kamilah long gave us a peak into her speech, just incase you could'nt make it to the big show. empower yourself to do something different. and it's not always what you can do, it is what is it that you can stop doing, that supports injustices. so i would leave that question for people... what is it that you can stop doing. committee members were excited with the large turn out today -- and hope it continues to grow next year. because of the administration that we have right now, in washington. even more reason to grow. it is only going to get better, so they better build a bigger place. just saying. there is every reason for this to get bigger, not smaller. after the performances, everyone headed outside and marched down to the plaza. where they listened to a loud recording of doctor king's famous "i have a dream speech." young and old, all sitting together to honor doctor martin luther king jr. in doctor king fashion. and if you are watching and feeling like you missed out on the festivities, there is good news. as you know it is an annual thing. they expect next year's to be even bigger. so go down to the store, buy yourself a little planner, and pencil in next year's celebration. from ashland, cameron derby, newswatch
