today. the catholic high school student who is face to face with a native american elder in a viral video sparked a lot of attention nation-wide. but now another side of the story has surfaced after the student -- nick sandmann-- issued his own statement -- saying the video doesn't portray the true nature of events. saying --quote-- "when we arrived, we noticed four african american protestors who were also on the steps of the lincoln memorial .... the protestors said hateful things." --end quote-- and that was true. a group of people identifying as hebrew israelites were caught on camera saying hateful things to just about everyone around -- including a preist. "that's make american great again. a bunch of child molesting fts." at first the group of catholic students who were there for the march for life are in small numbers but more and more show up -- watching but not engaging. the small group of israelite me continue taunting them. as a response, sandmann says a student asked one of the teacher chaperones for permission to begin school spirit chants to counter the hateful things that were being shouted at them. and they do. a couple minutes later you hear a drumbeat -- that is native american elder, nathaniel phillips and another drummer. phillips says it was their attempt to thwart potential violence. the kids danced to the drums and began chanting along. phillips who is also a vietnam veteran walks around -- other students avoid him until he comes face to face with sandmann -- and that's the video that we've seen go viral. sandmann says he was trying to difuse the situation -- not phillips. saying --quote-- "i believe that by remaining motionless and calm, i was helping to diffuse the situation. i realized that everyone had cameras and that perhaps a group of adults was trying to provoke a group of teenagers into a larger conflict." both sandmann and phillips have the space and opportunity to move further back -- away from each other -- but neither do. after seeing the inital viral video, thmassey, which res their district is praising the students tweeting in part --quote-- "in the face of racist and homosexual slurs the young boys refused to reciprocate or disrespect anyone. even when taunted by homophobic bigots, which was obviously bewildering to them, they insulted no one." --end quote--. the congressman said it was his honor
