mari nelson is live at hidden valley high school where the gap program started. it's looking to expand. mari, what do you need to be a mentor to these kids? i talked to the director of the program at the school about what the requirments are to become a mentor. she told me that almost anyone can do it. students will get paired with a mentor who can help them with fasfa, college applications, and talking about career options. a mentor is someone who can help students set goals and be proud of their accomplishments. almost anyone can be a mentor, a college degree isn't required. you need to be able to meet with your student about once every week or too for at least one school year...or even better until they graduate. cece "to be a mentor you just need to have a heart for kids. mentors, i have in my training manual, mentors are trustworthy. everything a student shares with a mentor is confidential. if you are interested in becoming a mentor for a high school student you can email the director of the program at with the email that you see on your screen or call the school for more info.
