newswatch 12. rachel says, "it is a beautiful day up here on mt a, and there are crews all over the place getting ready for opening day, which is now a day earlier than expected. members of the mount ashland team are marking off dangerous areasand grooming trails. malone knudson has worked here for almost 4 decades. malone says, "38 years." he's the lift supervisor." malone says, "i love it i must enjoy it otherwise i wouldn't be here for 38 years." he makes sure there's a good snow pack to cover hazards as much as possible. over in the rental shop, pat eagen is working on skis and snowboards he's been here 19 years, and says the employees are excited to be opening so early. pat says, "i've been here a long time and there's only been two times that i remember opening before december." that's a sense of excitement shared by skiers and snowboarders too. we found a group of three getting a sneak peek at the powder. daniel says, "coming up getting some morning turns got up around seven did a few out around aerial and windsor really good snow out there and we're getting it while it's good." of coursethe lifts are closed until fridayso they hike to the top using skins on the bottom of their skis and snowboards that break into two pieces....talk about a work out. when you get to the top you take it all apart and then put it back together and then you snowboard down." this year... mount ashland is adapting to lower snow levels. there's another low snow deckso they don't have to build up a ramp to the lifts with so much snow. hiram says, "we put in the big snow fence at the beginner life to deposit snow and to keep the kids from getting blown over on the windy days." so farthe mountain has about 2 feet of snowwhich is enough to open...but the folks at mount ashland are hoping for more. hiram says, "it's going to be early season conditions but the snow was really great but that's not stopping the excitement from the crewsup the mountain. malone says, "just seeing all the happy faces all the time it's hard not to have a good time when you come to mt a." rachel says, "if you want to find the ski schedule or a link to buy ticketsthat's on kdrv.com. in ashland, rachel tiede, nw12.. i"m going to go play in the snow." lifts open at 9 a.m. on friday...but if you get
