school cross country teams took to the asphalt at the jackson county expo for the fifth annual max king invite. now for the past three of those years, the 5000 thousand meters boys race was dominated by andy monroe... he's now at stanford so the door opened for a first-time winner this year. on the girls' side, a very different story ... last year's winner... emma schmerbach was only a freshman. now she's a sophomore and in position to put forth a max king legacy even more storied than monroe's ... out of the gates she seized the lead...and it only grew as the race went on. schmerbach all alone rounding the final the corner... a back to back champ ... this year with a time of 18:36... a sub-6 minute pace. emma says, "i think i was more confident this race and i definitely had a slow start to my season and so [e7]hs xc max king invite-wipe vo boys race came right after... and for crater, that meant jantz tostenson in position to take the torch from andy monroe. but grants pass's daniel beckstead has burst on to the scene and was looking to make life difficult on tostenson and company. daniel and jantz separated themselves from the pack less than a mile into the race... and rounding the home stretch corner all by himself ... it's beckstead who pulls away.. a time of 15:31... a sub five-minute per mile pace. daniel says, "after about two miles jantz was still with me but i noticed he started tiring out just a little bit and i just decided to throw a surge of myself in to make it look like i was tough, it was kind of a bluff but he didn't respond and i was like oh my gosh, i got this." thanks
