from the point s tire and auto sports life and a fifth straight state legion , it's a rematch from last year... the mustangs taking on the pepsi pak from washington... the team that ended their run in the northwest regionals in 2017. ===== sloppy defense a theme from start to finish in this one. pepsi pak shortstop spikes the throw, and medford is on the board with a run in the second. ===== the score would hold until the bottom of the fifth. two on for johno gassman... a non-factor at state because the smoke was making him sick. but back to his old self in the big blue sky of montana. 2-nothing mustangs. ===== bottom six, the pak has made it 2-1. second and third for jacob melton... and that'll do the trick. up there to do a job, he does. insurance for medford, which they would need ... and spoiler they'd wish they'd had more. ===== selah is on the ropes ... down to its final out. yes, two runners are on, but the tying one is on first. that's where we focus our attention. over at first, melton boots one that would've ended the game. instead, runners on second and third, and the ball finds its way to melton again. ===== he's done a whole lot of pitching and playing center this summer... not so much time at first base. and on his second error of the inning, both runs come into score to tie the game at three. ===== joe johnson on the bump trying to limit the damage. the pak made it sting worse though. a single brings home another run... it's 4-3. ===== the mustangs made it interesting in their last ups. two runners on, one out. more heartbreak. that ball in the dirt probably gets by 9 times out of ten. instead it's one heck of a pick by the catcher. that ends the threat ... and eventually the game. medford falls 4-3... their second loss in as many years to the pepsi pak. so three backbreaking runs in the seventh for selah... all of them coming with two outs. it turns what looked to be a surefire win for the mustangs into a heartbreaking loss. i talked to head coach nate mayben on the phone postgame to get his thoughts on the two errors at first base and why melton was playing there to begin with. [g8]bsb nw regionals mustangs vs pepsi pak-sotvo mayben says, "he's kind of been in a unique situation, he's been battling the flu all day yesterday, threw up about ten times yesterday. running around in the outfield and so that kind of made the situation, dictated what we did when we brought joe in. we had to put melton at first, not that he hasn't been there before or that i don't trust him, but he hasn't spent a lot of time over there." even with those two errors, the mustangs weren't entirely out of it. but after wyatt baptiste, who was the tying run, made the second out at third in the bottom of the seventh, all hope was zapped. and while it's a situation that calls for a lot of caution, mayben pointed out it took an incredible play from the catcher to field the ball cleanly. mayben says, "we don't need to be trying to advance in that situation. we want them to read the ball glance off the guy and actually get straight up like he was going to turn around and run and he actually gloved it cleanly, it was a great block, a great glove by the catcher."
