"watching out hendrix fire evacuations-llpkg "i wont stay, it's very frightening." dorothy burke edwards was one of nearly 50 people at tonight's communtiy meeting. she says her home isn't in an evacuation zone, but it's not that far away. and if she's told to leave, she will. she, like so many others, live way out in rural areas and wanted to know what this fire's growth means for them. "we've talked it over, what do we do if we evacuate, how do we handle five dogs." as of today - about 35 addresses were put under evacuation orders. the jackson county sheriff's office says none of those addresses were signed up for the county's emergency alert system. emma says, "to give you an idea of just how rural the land is around this fire, take a look at this evacuation map. the majority of those addresses under evacuation orders are in this level two zone. there's only two addresses in this level three zone and there's also only two in this level two zone. today i spoke with a family who lives in this level two zone where they say there is no cell "hopefully the alert will work, but i'll make sure and stay on top of that because i have five children in myself and we live up there so i'll make sure and stay on top of that." the fire is burning about 9 miles southwest of ashland. it grew more than 100 acres last night and today fire crews battled a thick layer of smoke. but the forest service says it's one of the highest priorties in the country.. and crews are attacking it from the ground and in the air. the focus area now is the southeastern part .. burning in steep terrain and causing some concern for timber resources. all while people like dorothy are getting ready to leave at a moment's notice. "what pictures do you take, moving films and just, what electronics, you don't know it's hard to choose." in jacksonville, emma balkenbush, newswatch 12.
