[e2]take a hike spence mountain-pkg jake says, "if you make the drive from medford to klamath falls as often as we do, chances are you've noticed the trial off to the side of highway 140 and right before you get to the lake. today we're at spence mountain with the option of either a five or a ten-mile journey. so, settle in and let's take a hike." into the mountain lakes wilderness for a 1,500 foot climb. before i could really settle in, this sign stumped me. i went left, when i should've gone right and ended up back at the start. turns out, looking at a map is a good idea ... the south ridge trail to spence peak trail was the route i was looking for. starting the incline, i came across many forms of life. the lizards want no part of you, the insects meanwhile want every part of you. jake says, "seems like every time you circle back to a view of the water, that's where all the nats are congregating. and yes, i'm repelling bugs left and right because of the bug spray i put on. still though, it makes it a little difficult to appreciate the scenery." don't let it get to you. once you cut back into the mountain, you're very much in the clear. this is a trail that was designed by bikers but not exclusively for them. i didn't run into any on my hike, just know it's a popular spot, which is part of the reason the uphill grind isn't too tough. two and a half miles to a crossroad where i decided to park it. jake says, "if you have the time and the energy, there's the end, adding five miles to my total trip wasn't mountain, jake garcia, newswatch 12 sports."
