"this is what democracy looks like" "i think a lot of people expect this to go away and expect us to lose interest but like we said this is not a trend this is us saying enough is enough." about 600 desks in the ashland school district sat empty today. with signs in hand, students walked through the doors and down the street. "anyone can be a victim of gun violence, anyone can know someone who is a victim of gun violence." these high school seniors made it all happen. they say last month's rally at the high school was about the victims of the parkland shooting. but today is about change. "policy change and gun control is what we are pushing for." and they're getting students of all ages on board. "seeing even younger students younger than us who may not be that invested in politics, but know the difference between right and wrong are here to take the revolution off of our hands when we get too old." walker elementary students made it out.. "me and my six other friends we walked by ourselves." and about 40 middle school students from willow wind. there were some parents present at the walkout as well. "they're feeling some empowerment and that's what we need in our country right now is for the kids to start paying attention and feeling empowered like they can do something because they can." emma says, "student organizers tell me any student who walked out today who did not have a parent call and excuse them will take home an unexcused absence for the day. however, they say it's something they say they're okay with as long as they get to fight for what they believe in. in ashland, emma balkenbush, newswatch 12."
