70 degree day coincided perfectly with the unofficial start of the high school baseball season. today at central point's anhorn field, crater, south medford, north medford and grants pass all got together for a baseball jamboree. plenty of storylines to get to, we'll start with the hosting comets. the only class five team of the bunch, but the one that had the most successful season. head coach jay campbell built another power in 2017, and crater made it all the way to the state championship game before falling to churchill. the comets are optimistic they can get back to that point and this time win it all. the biggest reason is one of their biggest players. jay says, "our number one pitcher is back this year. he was a first-team obviously a big piece of that. any time he's on the mound, we could beat anybody." south medford enters the season as the southwest favorite. like so many other of their athletic programs, the baseball team boasts a whole lot of seniors... 10 in all... eight that start. you have your multi-sport guys like jaalen owens.... and jaylin parnell. and of course the best senior in the entire state in jacob melton. ray says, "he was voted maxpreps top senior in the state of oregon and i can't say i disagree with that. i think that young man, he is one of the better baseball playes i've had the opportunity to coach in a long time. here's a kid that i think has got not only a great present but future too. i really believe he is one of the top two or three players in the state without a doubt." [g10]hs bsb jamboree-wipe vo cross town rival north medford jumped right into the line of fire and was the first to scrimmage south today. it was zack collins who got the ball in his first live action of his senior season. the black tornado don't roll in with a flashy roster... but it's one that's quickly growing up. and after the panthers on top, the rest of the conference is wide open and there for the taking. [g11]hs bsb jamboree-sot brett says, "last year was pretty much all new guys for us as far as playing varsity baseball so this is pretty much the second year of the nucleus that i have now. they're lunch pail guys. they're not going to stand out too much as far as being top, exceptional players, but they're very very good and they compete really hard and they play the game the right way." [g12]hs bsb jamboree-wipe vo and then there's grants pass. fifth place finishers in the conference a year ago and a team that graduated nine seniors. so they're young... and they also have a new head coach. kevin schafer going from north valley to g-p. turns out... he has some serious credentials. he played college baseball at southern idaho and has coached at the collegiate level as well. kevin says, "been a pitching coach before i went to north valley i was the pitching able to coach at the highest level at the 6a level. the process was great. i work inside the school so that's another opportunity i get to see our kids every day." and the ducks are going
