ASHLAND, Ore. -- Ashland High School is just a day away from playing its first varsity football game in two years, hopefully. Smoke has made it difficult for Ashland to determine if it will open vs Henley at home, in the basin, or up north. Whenever Ashland takes the field, there is one player who is just as diverse in location on the field.
Ronin Kimbrough, a senior at Ashland, will make it tough for opposing defenses to guess where he will be at any given moment. He is even making it difficult on Ashland head coach Beau Lehnerz.
"Rather than just play one position and be stuck to it, I get to rotate around the field," said Kimbrough. "I get to go from free safety to tight-end, then slot, and play hard everywhere I go."
At an indoor Ashland practice, Kimbrough moves from free safety to slot receiver. Then, he moves from running back to quarterback. The Ashland coaching staff is not giving away where he could play.
What it will give away, is the possibility that Kimbrough lands the starting quarterback job. If he does not come out playing starting QB, that does not mean Kimbrough lost that battle. According to Lehnerz, moving Kimbrough to a different position could allow for even more talent on the field at any one moment.
"He has grown as far as maturity," said Lehnerz. "As a younger kid he would be fiery, talk back, and not take coaching very well but he has really matured. He is taking the coaching and he is becoming a coach on the field. Like I said, he has seen a lot of things. He can get kids lined up and knows the defenses and kids listen to him. He has put in his time so he has earned that respect."
Kimbrough says he hopes to earn the quarterback job because he has been working hard for it. Wherever he plays, he is sure to be a talent.
Ashland will open vs Henley on Friday night. Wildfire smoke has caused the game to be moved out of Ashland. It will either be played at Henley High School or Willamette High School, depending on how the smoke moves through the state.
In the video above, you can watch a day in the life of Kimbrough as he navigates practice.
