MEDFORD -- The Medford School District placed South Medford head baseball coach, Ray Smith, on administrative leave pending an investigation. Smith confirmed to Newswatch 12 that he drank alcohol before Tuesday's game against North Medford.
MSD said assistant coach, Scott Carle, will take over as the team's head coach on an interim basis. South Medford is the No. 1 ranked team in the state in Class 6A. Tuesday, they beat rival North Medford to improve to 16-0 in conference play.

MSD issued the following statement regarding its investigation into Smith:
"Ray Smith has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation. Details are confidential, because this is a personnel matter. The safety of our students and staff is of the utmost priority."
