GRANTS PASS—Opening races for the 2019 Grants Pass Downs season come this weekend, marking the start of nine race days throughout June and July.
The Southern Oregon Horse Racing Association is eager to showcase a new season and the future of horse racing.
"Grants Pass Downs is just fun,” president Rod Lowe said. “You don't have to be a gambler, you don't have to wager on the horses. We have people who just come and sit in the grandstands have a hamburger or a hotdog, grab a soda or a beer and just enjoy watching the races."
The start of a new summer season builds off the momentum established from the spring, when the track announced the addition of commercial horse racing this fall.
“This is only the beginning,” said Tamra Martin, director of the Josephine County Fairgrounds. “The next few years, the transformation of horse racing, the transformation of the fairgrounds is going to be very visible.”
Bringing two cans of food this Saturday for the Josephine County Food Bank will net you a free day pass for later on in the season.
For Father’s Day on Sunday, dads get in free.
The first race on Saturday starts at 1 p.m.
