MEDFORD—Megan Fossen scored 15 points in the third quarter and 21 of her 25 in the second half, and the North Medford girls basketball team is onto the state tournament for the first time since 2008.

Held to only four points in the first half, the Black Tornado made a concerted effort to feed her the ball, and it led to tremendous results, as five-seed North Medford toppled 21-seed Central Catholic 62-34 on Friday night.

"Third quarter we definitely came out and said, 'Hey, we want to move the ball around and find her diving and posting.’ She was Megan,” head coach Tim Karrick said. “That's why she's Player of the Year. She just came up big in a big-time game."

The win now places the Black Tornado in the eight-team state tournament that will take place at Chiles Center in Portland. North opens play with four-seed West Linn on Wednesday at 3:15.

The Lions are riding a seven-game winning streak and are coming off a 43-39 over Oregon City. It represents their first state tournament appearance since 2012 after having lost in the second round on five consecutive occasions.

West Linn is led by Lexie Pritchard, the sister of Oregon Ducks star Payton Pritchard.

For North Medford meanwhile, it’s the first time the team has reached the quarterfinal round since 2008—Karrick’s last year in his first coaching stint prior to a three-year break.
