MEDFORD, Ore.—South Medford’s run of 92 consecutive Southwest Conference wins in girls basketball came to an end Friday night, as the Sheldon Irish clipped the Panthers 52-46.

It was the first loss in conference play since 2010 for South Medford.

In a showdown between two top-ten 6A teams, Sheldon stormed out of the gates, overwhelming the Panthers with a full-court press that generated a flurry of early turnovers.

South Medford settled in, however, and erased a double digit deficit and went into the half only down by two.

The Panthers would take the lead for brief spurts in the third and fourth quarter, but Sheldon won the free throw battle and hit a few clutch three-point shots late to ice the game.

The loss drops South Medford to 8-7 on the season.

The Panthers can take solace in the fact that their roster is composed of seven freshman, one sophomore, one junior and no seniors.

Head coach Tom Cole told NewsWatch 12’s Jake Garcia prior to Friday’s tip that this year’s freshman class is the single most talented class he’s had during his tenure with the Panthers.
