GRANTS PASS, Ore. —
UPDATE: On Tuesday morning, a Josephine County judge found 39-year-old Amber Sells guilty of murdering her mother's boyfriend, Randy Hummel, in April of 2017.
Addressing Sells at the beginning of the hearing, Judge Hull told her that he had decided the matter and did not wish to keep her in any further suspense. He indicated that she had spent four hours on the witness stand during the trial.
The judge sighed wearily as he began.
"My conclusion is, I find . . . beyond a reasonable doubt, Ms. Sells, guilty of murder," he said. "I'll give a few reasons for that, so you have an understanding perhaps of the decision I made — you don't get to do that with a jury."
Sells visibly slumped at the decision.
Judge Hull went on to say that Sells had been angry enough with Hummel to purposely murder him, and that her credibility was in tatters after she repeatedly changed her account of the events leading to Hummel's death. The judge said that Sells' meth addiction did not qualify as a defense, that he didn't believe Hummel's death was an accident, and that an expert did not find mental illness to be a mitigating factor in Sells' case.
A sentencing hearing for Sells will be held at a later date.

INITIAL REPORT: Amber Sells appeared in front of a judge on Thursday at the Josephine County Courthouse. On April 19th, 2017, she shot Randy Hummel in Wolf Creek — but says it was a complete accident.
Multiple recorded phone calls from 2017 with Sells and her mother were played in court. Sell admits she has been untruthful about her statements in the past, but one statement stayed the same, that Hummel's death was an accident. The gun belonged to her mother.
In court Thursday, she also admits that her meth addiction has affected her memory and recollection of events around the time of Hummel's death.
Watch Newswatch 12 tonight at 6 to hear what Sells has to say about the day that happened over two years ago. Her trial will continue on Friday.
