GRANTS PASS, Ore. -- Wellness Ware's motto is, "uplifting you when you need it most." The Grants Pass store does that by providing women who have had one or both breasts removed with custom fitting bras. They've helped thousands of women throughout the past 15 years.
These bras can cost $300 - $400. Many breast cancer survivors don't know that their insurance can help pay for these bras, according to Wellness Ware Owner Peggy Medina. In order for insurance to help pay for these bras, customers do need a note from their doctor.
The bras Wellness Ware sells are special because they have pockets that hold something called a breast form. The store carries bras and breast forms in all different shapes and sizes. There are different types of breast forms. Some can be worn on a day to day basis. Others are made for sports or swimming. They're lighter and don't absorb moisture.
Wellness Ware does have certified fitters who are trained to help breast cancer survivors, said Medina. She added that all employees are trained to be kind and empathetic. This creates a comfortable atmosphere in the shop.
"I always think about what if it was me," said Medina. "What would I want in a service that was being provided? What would I want as a woman going through that difficulty during a time when you're head's just spinning?"
Bra fittings normally take about one hour and start in one of the two fitting rooms at the store. A certified fitter will take measurements to help customers find the perfect bra. If a customer had one breast removed, fitters will find a breast form to even out their chest. They also help customers who have had a double mastectomy choose the size of their breast forms.
Above all, Wellness Ware lets customers lead their fitting appointment, according to Medina.
"For some people, they want to just tell you their whole story and you're there as that listening ear at that time and providing a service that makes them feel better," said Medina. "For some people, it's very private and personal."
The bras are for more than just aesthetics, said Medina. Women who have had one breast removed can have balance issues after their surgery.
Wellness Ware also sells special swimsuits for women who have had one or both breasts removes. Additionally, they have wigs, hats and scarves.
The store also partners with Soroptimist International of the Rogue Valley to help women who do not have insurance pay for bras.
