MEDFORD, Ore.-- Two hundred kids in the Medford area were able to get a free backpack full of school supplies Sunday.
The Medford and Grants Pass stores were just some of the mroe than 850 TCC retail stores across the country to giveaway the backpacks.
Each bag is filled with various school supplies, including pencils, folders, and glue.
Each Verizon Wireless store had 200 backpacks to giveaway.
Tyler Didato is the Medford District Manager for Verizon Wireless. He says they usually run out every year. Families can then go on a wait list. If other stores didn't give away all their backpacks, the families can sometimes get those ones.
"It’s important to do these kinds of things because there’s families in need of backpacks. If we can save them $20 a backpack that’s, I mean, amazing," said Didato. "Especially for some of them that have to put out $150 to $200 for their kids, they can come here and get a very stylish backpack.”
According to the National Retail Federation, families with school-aged children spent an average $684.79 each—a total of $27.5 billion—on school supplies in 2018 and this year is expected to increase.
Didato says they've done this for about six years straight now.
"Just to see the smiles on their faces is amazing. It truly is. Its just something small that we can do that has a greater impact on society,” said Didato.
