CAVE JUNCTION, Ore. — Reports of a car fire in California just north of the Collier Tunnel brought Illinois Valley Fire District (IVFD) to a scene where two people were significantly burned. The incident happened on Tuesday evening around 5 p.m.

According to IVFD, fire crews arrived to find a fully-involved car fire and the two burn patients, and a IVFD paramedic began patient assessment and treatment until AMR teams could arrive.

AMR Medic 4 took over treatment of the patients as soon as they arrived on the scene. Both patients had 'numerous burns,' according to IVFD.

Responders requested medical helicopters from both Mercy Flights and Reach—however, neither could take to the sky due to poor weather conditions. Instead, a second ambulance was requested from Del Norte County.

When the IVFD 8901 truck arrived, fire crews began extinguishing the fire, which was still fully-involved. Soon trucks from the Gasquet Fire District (GFD) in California arrived and took over fighting the car fire.

The cause of the car fire is under investigation by California Highway Patrol and GFD.
