Truck driver says it can be nerve-racking putting on chains during Oregon's winter weather

On Tuesday, truck drivers were struggling to put on chains amid the snow to head either east or west on Highway 140.

WHITE CITY, Ore. -- Highway 140 is covered in snow: from the trees, to the roads, and everywhere in between.

Truck drivers had to pull over and get chains on to continue where they needed to go.

"Trying to get to Klamath Falls for one more delivery and then hopefully make it close to 84 tonight," said Robert Price. He's a truck driver and he's been driving for six years.

When we talked to Price Tuesday afternoon, he didn't know where he would end up. "Winds are picking up so we will see what happens," said Price.

For some truck drivers, it's more nerve-racking getting chains on than driving in snow. "Most of this is driver's side, the side exposed to the vehicles going by. They don't slow down," said Price.

His fears are justified. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says truck drivers had the highest number of workplace deaths in 2016.

Just like emergency vehicles, Price wants drivers to move over and slow down. NewsWatch 12's Leah Thompson even stood on the side of the road with Price. She said it's very scary seeing cars fly past you.

"If we don't put them on it's an even bigger risk, if we slide or move," said Price.

These truck drivers are taking a risk putting on chains to make sure they don't impact other drivers on the road. "If we could just get people to slow down and it wouldn't be that bad for us," said Price.

The biggest thing to take away from this is being a cautious driver, especially bad weather. Price and other truck drivers have families just like you do.
