GRANTS PASS, Ore. — A 2-year-old boy passed away in the hospital following a suspected DUII crash in Josephine County on Tuesday, according to the Josephine County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies, firefighters, and paramedics responded to the two-vehicle crash shortly after 8 p.m. near the 2600-block of Fish Hatchery Road. The crash involved a 2002 Mercury Sable and a 2012 Volkswagen Jetta.
"After an investigation into the crash it was determined that the Mercury Sable operated by Amanda McFarland left the paved roadway and onto the gravel shoulder," the Sheriff's Office said. "The vehicle then spun into the opposite lane of travel where the Volkswagen Jetta impacted the passenger side of the Mercury Sable."
According to the Sheriff's Office, McFarland's 2-year-old son was in the rear passenger seat of the Mercury. Both the 21-year-old McFarland and her son were taken to Three Rivers Hospital in an ambulance. Just before 11 p.m. that night, McFarland's son passed away.
According to an earlier statement from Rural-Metro Fire, a dog was also killed in the crash.
The driver of the Volkswagen Jetta was treated and released from Three Rivers Hospital with no major injuries, the Sheriff's Office said.
"Oregon State Police responded to the crash scene to assist in a crash reconstruction," the Sheriff's Office said. "Upon investigation it was determined McFarland was operating her vehicle while under the influence of alcohol."
After being discharged from the hospital, McFarland was arrested and taken to the Josephine County Jail on charges of Manslaughter II, Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants, Reckless Driving, and Recklessly Endangering. The case was been forwarded to the Josephine County District Attorney's Office.
