MEDFORD, Ore. -- Early on Sunday morning an unknown suspect broke into Vape Guys Vapor in Medford. The co-owner, Derek Van Horn, says he believes the suspect got away with $6,000-$8,000 worth of product.
Van Horn told NewsWatch 12's Alicia Rubin that he has a security camera that is motion-activated. That camera started sending him alerts a little after midnight but Van Horn says he didn't wake up until 4 A.M.
"I open the first one I saw and I see the guy rummaging through everything," said Van Horn.
He then called police and says that they responded within 3-4 minutes but the suspect was gone.
Van Horn says he thinks the suspect was listening to a police scanner and heard when he called in the burglary because shortly after making the call Van Horn says the security camera was turned off and the suspect left.
The suspect stole hardware including the main battery parts and the top parts of vape devices. He also took money out of the register, some coils for the devices vape liquid.
According to the Medford Police Department consolidated incident report, burglary has increased by 6.5% with 33 reported burglaries in January alone. Theft saw an increase of 18.3% with 427 reported incidents.
NewsWatch 12 reached out to the Jackson County Sheriff's office and they told us that they haven't received the new crime numbers for the year but expect to receive them soon.
