MACDOEL, Calif. — While fire crews continued to battle the massive Lava Fire in Siskiyou County on Tuesday, the nearby Tennant Fire grew to almost 8,200 as crews there struggled to curb its spread.

Crews remained on the Tennant Fire overnight, working to build firelines and doing structural protection. An infrared flight over the fire provided the new acreage, with containment now estimated at 5 percent.

An update from fire officials on Tuesday night attributed the growth to the same litany of issues prevailing across the Pacific Northwest — critically low relative humidities, very high temperatures, and enough wind to keep the flames moving outward.

The California Interagency Incident Management Team 15 is now assuming command of the firefight.

Evacuation orders are in place for Bray, south of MacDoel including East and West Ball Mountain Road, Old State Highway, and Juanita Lake.

An evacuation warning is now in place for the Macdoel area, bordered by Sheep Mountain Road to the north, the Red Rock Road area to the east and homes within a mile to the west of Macdoel. On Tuesday morning, officials added a warning for residents living on West Ball Mountain-Little Shasta Road, up to Cook Campbell Road, all of Meiss Lake Road, and over to Forest Service Road 3.

"If you live in the Macdoel area please be ready to evacuate should it be ordered. In case of evacuation orders, the shelter is at the Dorris City Hall," the Siskiyou County Office of Emergency Services said.

An interactive map of current evacuation areas on both the Tennant and Lava fires can be viewed here.

Officials from the Klamath National Forest first reported the Tennant Fire on Monday evening, soon placing its size between 200 and 300 acres. It started near the junction of Highway 97 and Tennant Road.

While fire crews reported "good progress" Monday night after the winds settled — with multiple dozers working to contain spot fires north of Highway 97 — the fire grew by more than 1,000 acres throughout the afternoon and evening.
