WHITE CITY, Ore. -- Today, kindergarteners at Table Rock Elementary will be in the classroom. They're preparing for the first day of school through a free program at Table Rock Elementary School called Kinder Academy. Parents can still sign their kindergarteners up for Kinder Academy.
The program runs from August 19 - 22. Each day, the program starts at 8 a.m. and ends at noon. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
Kinder Academy wants to get these new scholars comfortable with the classroom before the official first day of school. The program will familiarize scholars with different things, such as reading activities, morning assignments and how to write their name. Teachers said it is important for first time students to feel comfortable.
"They go from either having a preschool experience, where there is a lot of play, or they haven't been to preschool," said Natasha Schroeder, a Kinder Academy Teacher. "So, coming to school for the first time can be hard for them and upsetting. If they're stressed out and upset, they're not in a good place to be learning."
Almost 90 students signed up for Kinder Academy at Table Rock Elementary School. That's almost half the incoming class.
The Eagle Point School District has these types of programs in place any time a scholar makes a big transition. That means these programs take place before kindergarten, elementary school, middle school and high school.
If your scholar cannot make it to Kinder Academy, teachers said there are a couple of things you can do at home to prepare your scholar for the first day of school.
Table Rock Elementary Principal Valerie Shehorn said parents should try to set a bedtime for their children before school starts. That way, they'll be prepared to have a bedtime routine when school does start. She also said it is important for students to learn about routines and schedules. That way, students can aim for perfect attendance.
"Prepare them for school days and have attendance be a focus," Shehorn said. "Explain how important it is to be at school and in their kindergarten classroom every day. And starting those conversations that Monday is a school day and Tuesday is a school day. And Saturday and Sunday are the day's we're staying home. But if it's a school day, we're going to school."
Table Rock Elementary scholars have a little more time before they start school on September 3.
When students do head back to school, they can expect to see construction work on campus. That's because the school will be adding a new building to join the upper and lower campuses of Table Rock Elementary, according to Principal Shehorn. The building will have four new classrooms and a new set of student and staff bathrooms.
About 800 scholars go to Table Rock Elementary right now. That number is expected to increase as White City grows and this is why the principal said they need more space.
