Suspect in custody after 'active threat' contained in Corvallis

Police responded to reports of a gunshot at Foster Farms in Corvallis on Thursday morning.

UPDATE: A suspect is in custody after police say he shot a handgun inside a Foster Farms in Corvallis Thursday morning.

Captain Nick Hurley with the Corvallis Police Department said the scene is still active and residents should avoid the area of NW 9th Street.

Police said a gunshot was reported at about 8:11 a.m., and employees quickly left the building. Police arrived on scene and secured the perimeter.

The Oregon State Police SWAT team was called in to handle a barricaded subject situation, but police said the suspect left the building and surrendered before SWAT entered. The man was taken to the police department to be interviewed. Authorities went in to search the building to make sure it is secured.

So far there have been no casualties or injuries reported.

Many area businesses went on lockout due to the active threat situation, including Linn-Benton Community College.

An employee at the nearby Baja Fresh, Alex Contreras, told reporters that he heard one gunshot.

"I was like scared. I just ran inside. I just got here, you know. I thought I was in a war zone for a little while," Contreras said.

In a statement, Foster Farms said that management became aware of a possible active shooter at the Corvallis facility around 8:30 a.m. The company said that it prepares for emergencies like this, and immediately evacuated employees without any injuries while alerting police.

"The safety of our employees is our highest priority and Foster Farms will provide counseling and support services to its Corvallis employees," the company said. "We are thankful this incident was concluded without harm to our employees or the greater community. We greatly appreciate local law enforcement’s professionalism in quickly resolving the situation."

UPDATE: There are no injuries and no additional suspects in the ongoing response at Foster Farms in Corvallis, according to Corvallis Police.

In a tweet, the agency said that the investigation would continue but lockdowns in the area were lifted outside of the crime scene itself.

INITIAL REPORT: After a report of a gunshot at Foster Farms in Corvallis on Thursday morning, a suspect has been taken into custody.

Corvallis police say the scene is still active. At about 10:15 a.m., five police officers walked into Foster Farms with their guns drawn.

Police said a gunshot was reported at 8:11 a.m. in the area of Foster Farms on NW 9th Street. So far there have been no casualties or injuries reported.

Authorities were evacuating nearby businesses and working on notifying others of the situation.

This is a developing story, and will be updated as more information comes in.
