LAKEVIEW, Ore. — A Lake County grand jury approved a murder charge for the man accused of shooting and killing 26-year-old Jacob Wheat in Lakeview at the beginning of July.
Deputies from the Lake County Sheriff's Office and troopers with Oregon State Police responded to a parking lot in Lakeview on the night of July 6. They found Wheat suffering from gunshot wounds and began giving him first aid, but Wheat died at the scene.
Near the end of July, investigators identified 32-year-old Dean Arthur Wood as a person of interest in the case. Wood was already in custody on unrelated charges, OSP said at the time.
A grand jury on Tuesday indicted Wood on charges of Murder II, Assault I, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and Unlawful Use of a Weapon. Wood's wife, 32-year-old Misty Lynn Wood, was also charged with Hindering Prosecution and Tampering with Physical Evidence "related to events following the murder of Jacob Wheat," OSP said.
In a separate case, Wood faces charges for possession and delivery of heroin, in addition to possession of methamphetamine. Court documents indicate that Wood has a prior felony conviction for second degree robbery in Sacramento, California.
Both Wood and his wife are in the Lake County Jail pending trial.
