GRANTS PASS, Ore. — A group of students managed to escape from their school bus unharmed after it caught fire along Redwood Highway on Wednesday afternoon, according to Rural Metro Fire.
The bus from Three Rivers School District was carrying 13 students when a fire broke out inside its engine compartment just after 4 p.m. near Redwood Vista Lane. Rural Metro said that the bus driver was able to stop and evacuate the students without any issues.
"The fire caused a significant traffic issue southbound out of Grants Pass, as firefighters from Rural Metro Fire and Grants Pass Fire extinguished the burning engine compartment," Rural Metro said. "As a result, a secondary crash occurred in the traffic line-up. Thankfully no injuries were reported in that crash."
By 5 p.m., the agency said that the fire had been extinguished and traffic was flowing southbound, if slowly. Rural Metro said there was no need to seek a detour for the evening commute.
