SoHumane resumes pet adoptions by appointment only

The shelter had to close its doors to the public earlier this week due to coronavirus concerns, but adoptions are now back on the table.

MEDFORD, Ore. — After closing its doors to the public earlier this week amid a statewide lockdown on coronavirus, Southern Oregon Humane Society says that it will resume pet adoptions by appointment only.

The new pet adoption method begins on Monday, March 23.

"We appreciate your patience while we paused to develop a protocol that we believe mitigates the risk to our staff, volunteers and our community," SoHumane said in a statement. "We have used this time to provide additional training to our staff and gather best practices from our animal sheltering network across the country."

SoHumane has links on its website to schedule an appointment. The organization has asked that only serious potential pet adopters schedule appointments to see a dog or cat. All available animals are on the website as well, in addition to the adoption application.

"We feel optimistic about being able to continue to find homes for the dogs and cats in our care," SoHumane said. "We feel this new protocol is in the best interest of the animals, and we are hopeful the unconditional love they provide will be a comfort to their new family members. SoHumane will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation and keep you informed of any changes that may be necessary. As always, we are truly grateful for your support."
