DORRIS, Calif. — Two women from Milwaukee, Wisconsin were shot and killed in an apparent robbery attempt near the town of Dorris early Monday morning, according to the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office (SCSO).

Deputies responded just after 2 a.m. following reports of a shooting and possible robbery. The original 911 call came into California Highway Patrol (CHP) dispatch, which relayed the info to SCSO.

Along with firefighters and paramedics, deputies arrived at the area described by the caller — a place near "Big Stump" and Dorris-Brownell Road — "a rural, isolated, mountainous area located approximately three miles northwest of the City of Dorris, commonly referred to as Pleasant Valley Highlands," the Sheriff's Office said.

On a property on Hilltop Road near Buckhorn Flat Road, first responders found a woman dead inside of a small shack. Also on the property was another woman, mortally injured from several gunshot wounds. She died at a nearby fire station while paramedics waited for a helicopter to arrive and take her to the hospital.

On Wednesday, Sheriff Jon Lopey identified the two women. 81-year-old Mor Hang lived in the Pleasant Valley Highlands area northwest of Dorris, having recently moved there from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Sheriff said that 49-year-old Rosey Vang, the other victim, also came from Milwaukee and may have been visiting the area.

Detectives and a forensic technician from the Major Crime Unit soon responded and staked out an extensive crime scene investigation that remains underway. SCSO said that detectives interviewed two relatives of the victims, but no suspects or persons of interest have been identified.

"There is no direct indicator to believe area residents are endangered but all citizens in the local Dorris area should keep their vehicles and homes locked and secured," the Sheriff's Office said. "All citizens are urged to report any suspicious activity or persons to the SCSO."

Though law enforcement canvassed the area extensively, SCSO said that they did not find any suspects or immediate threats to the community.

The agency said that it found an illegal marijuana grow operation on the property along with harvested cannabis, but investigators don't yet know if the attack was related.

“An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday, October 17, which will provide additional information to investigators and help to affirm the causes and manners of death in this case," said Sheriff Lopey. "On behalf of the SCSO family, our thoughts and prayers are extended to the victims, their family members, and friends. Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact the SCSO 24-hour Dispatch Center at (530) 841-2900.”
