KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. — An investigation is underway after an inmate at the Klamath County Jail was discovered dead late Thursday night, according to the Klamath County Sheriff's Office.
The agency said that 38-year-old Francisco Garcia Torres was found unresponsive by deputies just before midnight. Deputies and medical staff reportedly tried to revive him, but they were unsuccessful.
Detectives later responded to investigate. The Sheriff's Office says that it has requested the Klamath Falls Police Department lead the investigation into Torres' death.
Torres' family has been notified, and the investigation is still considered ongoing. The Sheriff's Office did not indicate a potential cause of death at this stage.
According to court records, a secret indictment was issued for Torres in December of last year, charging him with delivery and possession of methamphetamine and fentanyl, possession of cocaine, and weapons charges. He was arrested on a warrant in Union County at the end of January before being transferred to the Klamath County jail.
Torres entered initial "not guilty" pleas to all charges at his arraignment in February. Court documents indicate that he was granted conditional release, but was again arrested on a warrant in Union County and returned to the Klamath County Jail in May. He remained there awaiting trial until his death this week.
