MEDFORD, Ore. — The Medford Police Department (MPD) says that it arrested a registered sex offender after her shot himself in the neck outside of the Rogue Valley Mall on Sunday.
Officers responded to the mall after someone called in for a "male who had apparently shot himself in the neck with a .38 revolver." Medford Police did not find the man at the scene, but eventually tracked him to the emergency room at a local hospital, where he was being treated for a gunshot wound to the neck that was not life-threatening.
"The investigation revealed the suspect was handling the revolver while seated in a vehicle at the Rogue Valley Mall parking lot, when it apparently accidentally discharged," Medford Police said.
MPD identified the man as 20-year-old Nelson Loretto, a convicted felon and registered sex offender. The agency said that Loretto was out of compliance with his registration.
Loretto was taken into jail after being treated at the hospital. He faces charges for being a felon in possession of a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon, failure to report as a sex offender, a probation violation for his rape conviction, and unlawful possession of heroin. Loretto is being held without bail due to the probation violation.
