MEDFORD, Ore. -- Starting Monday, all three Fred Meyer stores in the Rogue Valley are going to be collecting school supply donations.

Those stores include Fred Meyer South on Center Drive, Fred Meyer North on Crater Lake Highway and the Fred Meyer in Grants Pass. There will be a donation bucket at the entrance of each store and at the customer service counter.

This way, customers can buy school supplies and drop them in the donation bucket on the way out.

Frey Meyer works with the Salvation Army to host this donation drive each year. They said it is important to get involved in the community.

"We hear every year about how schools have budget shortfalls," said Jim Floyd, the assistant store manager at Fred Meyer South. "And believe it or not there are a lot of teachers who buy the supplies themselves because there's a lot of children out there and their families maybe can't afford it. So, this is a way for everyone to help give back because it's really important that we invest in our children for a better future."

The donation drive will start on July 22 and continue until August 23.

Students need more than just school supplies before they head back to the classroom. That's why a local organization is hosting a back to school shopping spree for low income students.

This is the 28th year KidSpree is hosting its back to school shopping spree. The organization helps about 200 elementary school students each year.

On the day of the shopping spree, students get free breakfast and a backpack with school supplies. They will also get about $120 to buy clothes at JC Penney. Volunteers help them shop. Students are already chosen for this year's shopping spree. Even after almost three decades, KidSpree organizers say this event is still exciting.

"We're so happy to help these families," said Kathy Garrett Canape, the fundraising and volunteer chairman at KidSpree. "We really hope that it does help children be more successful in school. That's what we really feel we're doing. It's a thrill. It's really a thrill."

KidSpree said they still need volunteers to shop with students on the day of the shopping spree. If you are interested in volunteering, you can send an email to Canape: bkgco2@aol.com
