MEDFORD, Ore. -- Local companies are coming together to encourage high school students to pursue careers in Southern Oregon.

The Soredi Quest is an online scavenger hunt that used clues and questions to lead students to find the answers in a number of local company profiles. The goa of Soredi Quest is to educate local high school students about potential careers they can pursue in Southern Oregon.

Soredi Quest took two years to successfully plan and Friday night all that hard work will pay off. The finale event starts at 6 p.m. at North Medford High School.

Rob Merriman, Medford's Community Developer Manager, told NewsWatch12 there's a stigma that students need to go someplace else to build a successful career. Through soredi quest, he's hoping to end that stigma.

"We'd really like to end that notion with high school students today and say, you can choose to leave or not but there's a lot happening here to be excited about and be aware of," Merriman said.

About 1,000 students from Medford and Grants Pass High Schools are participating. Students are competing for scholarships and prizes by submitting one minute videos that show the unique qualities of local companies they were introduced to.

At the finale, over $9,000 in scholarships and prizes will be awarded to the teams with the top videos.

Soerdi's goal was to make the experience informative, but fun. At the end of the business scavenger hunt, students formed teams to create a video promoting one local business. Marijke, Valorie and Brianna were among several scholarship winners Friday night. The three girls won the "people's choice award" for best video.

Marijke said, "Just putting it together was a lot of fun and it was super creative and it was nice having all of our ideas come together to form a really cool video."
