ROGUE RIVER HWY, Ore. --
UPDATE: Around 8:30 p.m. on Thursday night, troopers from Oregon State Police Troopers and Jackson County Sheriff's deputies say they responded to I-5 at Exit 45A following reports of a suicidal man armed with a handgun. While enroute to the scene, police say they called in medical personnel to stage in the area.
The first trooper arrived on the scene just after 8:45 p.m. A total of three Oregon State Police troopers and two Jackson County Sheriff's Deputies ultimately responded. The officers say they found the man on Rogue River Highway, underneath the I-5 overpass, armed with a handgun.
At 8:59 p.m., Medford Police says that "shots were fired." The man was immediately found to have died. No officers were injuried.
Per protocol, the Major Assault and Death Investigation Unit (MADIU) was summoned to the scene. The Medford Police Department was identified as the lead agency in the investigation, assisted by the Jackson County District Attorney's Office. The initial investigation indicates that the man fired his handgun during the incident, and one officer on the scene also fired his weapon.
Police say the deceased has been identified as 73-year-old Tony Orland Mills. He lived in the 2000 block of Rogue River Hwy, Gold Hill. Mills' next of kin has been notified.
NewsWatch12 spoke to Medford Police, but they have not confirmed which weapon the fatal gunshot came from.

INITIAL REPORT: Medford Police say that OR-99 Rogue River Highway between I-5 exit 45-A and Millers Gulch Road will be closed until approximately 10 a.m. due to police activity in the area.
