Revisiting What Goes In The Recycle Bin

How Rogue Disposal's changing needs will affect what you throw away.

MEDFORD, Ore. -- Today Rogue Disposal announced the specifics on what changes will be happening with their recycle program, and when these changes will go into effect. Starting Monday, March 5th, the sanitation company will significantly cut down on what will be acceptable fare for the recycling bin.

Their statement listed only the following materials:
- Corrugated Cardboard (the kind with the wavy middle layer)
- Tin and Aluminum Cans (no lids)
- Newspaper (including inserts and ads)
- Plastic Milk Jug Style Containers (clear or white, no lids)

Previously, most recyclable materials collected by sanitation services around the US were shipped to companies in China for processing and re-use. Now, China has severely cut down on the amount of recyclable material they will import from the US. A big reason for this change is due to contamination—garbage or un-recyclable items mixed in with everything else.

Rogue Disposal needs to look for domestic markets in that material, buyers in the US willing to take it on. Contamination is just as much of a problem for domestic buyers as it is for those in China.

"'We know that whatever mix we collect needs to be made up of materials that are easy to describe and communicate to customers, which will ultimately lead to significantly reduced contamination,'" Laura Leebrick, Governmental & Community Affairs Manager for Rogue Disposal was quoted in the statement as saying.
