MEDFORD, Ore. — With restaurant doors opening just a bit wider under Phase II guidelines in Oregon, the dining area is also seeing more servers return to the workforce.
At Kaleidoscope Pizzeria and Pub, that's exactly what's happening.
When restaurants shut down in March at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in Oregon, Kaleidoscope furloughed nearly all of its wait staff. According to owner Jake Allmaras, the servers all accepted being furloughed voluntarily. Even then, it was still tough for some of the servers.
"It was a little scary, to be honest," Mindy Herndon, a server and manager at Kaleidoscope for nearly five years said. "But I was also glad that the community was taking care of business and making sure that the community stayed safe."
But with Phase I and II reopening in all five southern Oregon counties, the wait staff at the award-winning pizza spot in Medford are just about all returning.
"I think all of our wait staff with maybe one or two exceptions came back when we reopened dine-in," Allmaras said. "So they're happy to be here."
Allmaras said everyone wishes they could just return to how business was before they closed their doors in March, but he and the wait staff know they will need to be patient. Either way, the servers are excited to see people coming through their doors.
"It felt great, super excited to be back to work and to see the people getting back out in the community, kids especially," Herndon said. "It was really nice to see little kids out and getting to enjoy themselves."
