EAGLE POINT, Ore. — A registered sex offender living northeast of Eagle Point is now in custody after investigators found that he was attempting to lure a 17-year-old girl into meeting up with him, according to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office (JCSO).
Detectives arrested 35-year-old Jed Randall Burns on Wednesday while serving a search warrant at his home in the 300-block of Leafwood Drive.
"Burns is required to register as a sex offender in Oregon due to a previous conviction," JCSO said.
The investigation began in February of 2019 when a cyber tip came in to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) reporting sexual images of a child shared online.
The information was passed to Oregon Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (ICAC) and to JCSO to continue the investigation.
Detective later identified Burns as the suspect in the case. According to JCSO, the detectives found that Burns had been contacting a 17-year-old victim through social media and texting, then tried to meet up with her "for sexual purposes."
Burns has been lodged in the Jackson County Jail for two counts of first degree encouraging child sexual abuse, two counts of using a child in a display of sexual conduct, second degree online sexual corruption of a child, and luring a minor.
JCSO said that they are concerned Burns may have additional victims in the Jackson County area who have not yet come forward. Anyone with information can call the JCSO tip line at (541) 774-8333. Refer to case #19-5151.
