MERLIN, Ore. -- Every 15 minutes, a driver is killed because of some form of distracted driving. North Valley High School students are seeing for themselves what can happen when they make the decision to get behind the wheel when they shouldn't.

Students got a front seat to a simulated fatal car crash. The program brings in volunteer first responders and law enforcement to act out a real-life car crash scene, using students as victims.

Melissa Wills organized the program.

She said she has been to too many scenes that people have died at and wants to help students realize what can happen.

"They're car crashes with kids or even adults, they text and drive, they are sleep-deprived and they drive, they drink and drive, they're playing with their phone, they're eating," Wills said.

Lance Nickerson, Sophomore, said it's hard to imagine being involved in a crash until you are.

"Everybody thinks oh that won't happen to me, but the person that that happened to said the same thing," Nickerson said.

Wills said she hopes to bring the program to the other 11 high schools in Jackson and Josephine County.

You can email Melissa to set up the program at Evry15mins@gmail.com.
