EAGLE POINT, Ore--- Vaccines are available to protect your dogs from rattlesnakes.
The Western Diamondback is very common in the Rogue Valley. They love to hide in rocky areas, in some of the most common places to hike.
Your dogs can be at risk when going on hikes with you. Vets say that snakes do not like dog barks, and they will strike when they hear a bark.
If your dog is bitten, take your dog to the vet immediately.
If you don't realize your dog was bitten, there are some symptoms to recognize.
Your dog will have severe swelling where the bite has taken place. The dog will become lethargic quickly, and whine from the pain.
One place that can be hard to recognize, is if the dog is bitten under the tongue. When you get home from your hike, check your dog out to make sure nothing bad has happened. Vets are saying that dogs can be bitten without even realizing it.
The vaccine can be purchased at most vet centers and animal hospitals. It is a two-shot vaccine, which costs about 25 dollars per shot.
The anti-venom that has to be used (if the dog is not vaccinated) can cost anywhere between 500 and one thousand dollars.
