GRANTS PASS, Ore. — A Canadian man has been sentenced for preying on a Grants Pass teenager online, sharing sexually explicit images and videos to her family and friends.

The Grants Pass Department of Public Safety says that it received a report of the crimes in May of 2016. According to the agency, a female victim in Grants Pass had been contacted by a man via the messenger app Kik who claimed to have hacked her Apple iCloud account.

The man, whose identity was unknown at the time, had found sexually explicit photos of the victim, taken when she was 15 years old. He threatened to send the photos to the victim's friends and family if she did not send him more photos and videos. When she refused, police say that the suspect sent those explicit images to the victim's family and friends via Facebook Messenger, using an assumed name.

A Grants Pass detective was able to trace the suspect's IP address to Calgary, Canada. Working with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) and the Southern Alberta Internet Child Exploitation Unit, investigators were able to identify the suspect as Andrew Neil Cox.

Officers in Calgary served a search warrant at Cox's home, finding more evidence of child exploitation.

Cox was charged under Canadian law with charges for Accessing Child Pornography, Importing or Distributing Child Pornography, Possessing Child Pornography, and Extortion. On December 11 of this year, Cox was sentenced to five years in Canadian prison.

"Although this was a lengthy investigation, it is an excellent example of the results that can be achieved when law enforcement agencies partner together, whether locally or internationally, to combat child sexual exploitation," GPDPS said in a statement.
