MEDFORD, Ore. – Ms. Shaefer’s 5th grade class at Wilson Elementary School has been pinching pennies all year to donate to a local non-profit of their choosing.

The goal was to collect 1,000 pennies by their 1,000th day of school.

They ended up with 7,700. “We collected more because we knew we were going to donate them,” said 5th grader, Laelia.

The class voted to donate all of their pennies to Sanctuary One, a non-profit “care farm” dedicated to helping nature, animals, and people.

“We wanted to donate to as much of a cause as we could,” said Laelia, “Sanctuary one had a lot of animals and it was really nice for the environment and really big.”

Ms. Shaefer says this is her first year to organize the penny donation but says that she plans to do it again next year.
