KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. —
UPDATE: A power outage that left an estimated 2,396 Pacific Power customers without electricity on Monday morning resulted from an unfortunate interaction between power lines and a "large bird," according to Klamath County Fire District #1 (KCFD1).
Calls first came in to 911 around 9:30 a.m., reporting a brush fire behind Wal-Mart on Laverne Way. KCFD1 says that a fire engine, two wildland patrol vehicles and two command vehicles arrived at the scene soon after, with nine personnel attacking the fire.
Firefighters knocked down the flames within a half-hour, with full containment accomplished within the hour. Fire crews found damage to two power poles and about one-quarter acre of grass and sage brush.
The widespread outage was caused by the two damaged poles, but KCFD1 says that they were found to be "safe for use" and were re-energized soon after.
After investigating the fire, officials discovered that the fire had started after a large bird came in contact with the power lines.
