PORTLAND, Ore. — The Oregon Health Authority reported 24 more deaths attributed to coronavirus and more than 4,700 new cases since Friday in its first report of the week on Monday. Meanwhile, hospitalizations of COVID-19 cases only continue to mount — leaving local hospitals without any available intensive care beds.

OHA logged 2,330 new cases on Friday, 1,207 on Saturday, and 1,164 cases on Sunday. The latest fatalities bring Oregon's death toll to 3,036 since the beginning of the pandemic.

As of Monday morning, the state listed 937 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 throughout the state, 37 more than the day prior. There were 253 COVID-19 patients in intensive care unit beds, which is 22 more than on Sunday. Currently, OHA says that about 7 percent of ICU beds in the state are available, and 8 percent of other beds.

Bed availability varies somewhat by region. In two hospital regions — including Region 5, which covers Jackson and Josephine counties — there are no ICU beds available at all, according to the OHA's Monday data.

Jackson County Public Health said that there are currently 209 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in Region 5, including 41 patients in the ICU.

"Jackson County Public Health and the hospital systems are encouraging the community to help slow the spread of COVID-19 and provide relief to the hospital system," the agency said in a statement. "The best way to stop the spread of the Delta variant is to get vaccinated against COVID-19 and wear masks."

With cases still spiking and hospitals overwhelmed, OHA urged people to not seek COVID-19 testing at an emergency department unless emergency care is needed for the symptoms.

"If you have a medical condition that doesn’t require emergency care, an urgent care center will help you get the care you need and will save emergency departments from added strain," the agency said.
